Constant vertigo, or Meniere’s disease in Western Medicine, is a disorder of the middle ear with no good conventional treatment. Chinese medicine, however, can identify many causes of vertigo, and therefore there is no one way to prescribe a treatment for Meniere’s disease. Here, two cases are presented with the same main symptom — an extreme dizziness that affects normal daily function — but the
diagnosis in Chinese Medicine pointed to very different root causes. Both cases were treated quickly and successfully with the corresponding Chinese Medicine prescription.
Case 1: The patient was a Caucasian female just over 20 years old who works as a clinic assistant. She suffered from severe dizziness; she felt the room spin even when lying down and needed assistance to stand or walk. The physician at the clinic she worked in diagnosed her with Meniere’s disease and sent her home to rest, but her condition showed no signs of improvement even after lying in bed for three weeks. The patient was slightly overweight, had a thick white coating on her tongue, and a weak pulse. She also had lethargy, heavy limbs, and trouble urinating. Mr. Yeh identified that the root cause lied in her kidney system, which had too much body fluid. Five bags of herbs were prescribed to her for the week. After taking only three bags, the patient fully recovered and was able to get up from bed to do household chores. She was then instructed to take the rest of the five bags in order to ensure her recovery.
Case 2: The patient, a Chinese female in her early fifties, suffered severe dizziness for more than a month. She sought treatment from both Western and other Chinese medicine physicians without any improvement. In addition to the severe dizziness that forced her to stay in bed, she had acid reflux, bloating, and tightness and pain in her right flank and right shoulder. Mr. Lee identified that the root cause lied in the middle section of the torso (i.e. stomach and spleen): there was “cold dampness” there and early-stage gallstones. An herbal prescription was provided, and the patient fully recovered a week later excepting a minor lingering pain in her shoulder.
Meniere’s disease, as it is called in Western medicine, is caused by lymph reflux or absorption problems in the middle or inner ear. In these two cases, the two Chinese Medicine physicians believed that the symptoms were closely related to body fluid. However, the root causes were very different; one lied in the kidney system and the other in the stomach and spleen. Although the goal to balance body fluid was the same, the herbal prescriptions were completely different. However, with the correct diagnosis in both cases, both patients were treated quickly and successfully.
These two cases clearly present some [...]
