Anaphylaxis is a medical term used to describe an allergic reaction. It is also known as an anaphylactic reaction.
An allergic reaction can range from hives or a rash to respiratory arrest leading to death.
There are two typical ways an anaphylactic reaction happens:
(1) Where a patient has a known allergic reaction and receives a medication that they are known to be allergic to, and
(2) Where a patient is given a medication that they did not know they were allergic to.
Both of those situations require different questions that need to be answered to determine whether there were departures from good and accepted medical care.
