According to UN estimates, the world population will increase significantly from 7 billion today to more than 9 billion by 2050. At the same time, the available agricultural area and grassland will decrease rapidly due to climate changes and soil degradation as fossil fuels are exhausted . For these reasons, humanity will face unforeseen challenges to develop new paradigms for the natural world.

Innovative processes have to make use of existing biological resources more sustainably than in the past. Bioeconomy can significantly contribute to meeting these challenges. The basics of bioeconomy are biotechnological research and the resulting innovations in agricultural economy, manufacturing sectors and all related services that develop, produce and process or otherwise use biological resources (plants, animals, microorganisms).

Plants are the basis for all life and stand at the centre of bioeconomy. Photosynthesis provides the material basis on which our society is built. Even today, we do not only depend on plants for our food and nourishment – plants also provide the raw material for the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries and are used as fuel.

The plant-based bioeconomy is one of the key industries in the 21st century which can secure the provision of food and animal feed, secure the future of renewable resources and help to overcome our dependence on fossil fuels. The Leibniz ScienceCampus Halle – plant-based bioeconomy (WCH) unites leading experts in the field of plant science, the agricultural, economic and social sciences in order to meet the social challenges of our time.
