We’ve heard it everywhere, from our parents to our friends to articles on the internet: visit the dentist regularly, with every six months being the most recommended option. At these visits, dentists check on your overall oral health and usually do a deep cleaning, which helps keep your teeth strong and healthy. Although checking up with the dentist twice a year is essential, you shouldn’t restrict yourself to these regular visits; there are numerous reasons you might schedule an appointment outside of your usual checkup. If you experience any of these conditions, call your dentist to schedule an appointment as soon as possible:
1. Bad breath
Bad breath, or halitosis, might seem like a relatively small problem; however, it can be indicative of much larger issues under the surface. If you suffer from chronic bad breath, talk to your dentist to see if any other causes – tooth decay, gum disease, or other dental problems – might be behind your condition.
2. Bleeding gums
Bleeding gums – whether they bleed spontaneously, or when you irritate them by brushing your teeth or flossing – are a sign of a much larger problem called periodontal disease, of which gingivitis (gum disease) is a subcategory. Gum health is essential for overall health, so see your dentist immediately if you experience any negative symptoms.
3. Tooth sensitivity
Sensitive teeth can occur from time to time, and they usually aren’t a problem unless the sensitivity persists. You may be tempted to simply deal with it, or to use special toothpastes to help with the problem; however, tooth sensitivity can often be a sign of damaged nerves deep within the tooth, and if allowed to persist, it can lead to serious toothache and require surgery. To avoid getting to this stage, see your dentist.
4. Cavities
Tooth decay is one of the most common problems experienced by many people, and the longer you leave it, the worse it gets. See the dentist immediately to get a sealant, filling, or (if the condition is beyond repair) to remove the tooth.
5. Yellowed teeth
Although you might think that yellowed teeth are simply an aesthetic issue, the buildup of plaque and tartar can cause serious problems over time. Dentists can do a deep cleaning and even whiten your teeth for you! They will also give you helpful advice on what you can do to avoid tooth discoloration, including special toothpastes and flossing.
