HERE’S THE TOOTH CHART – http://www.toothwizards.com/tooth-chart.html
Compare the following:
You’re sitting in the dentist’s chair about to start your appointment. “Open Wide” he says to you. You remember what happened when he said those very words last time. And you promised yourself you’d make much more of an effort. But here you are again. OK you’ve brushed your teeth conscientiously since then for a couple of minutes each day but that seems to have made no real difference. What else did you do? Not much. You probably didn’t know of any other options, especially as your dentist told you to brush and floss more So you carried on in the hope that conscientious brushing would be all you needed and you’re right back in the seat you didn’t want to be, about to endure some drilling or worse still, some unexpected gum surgery.
or……
You’re sitting in that reclining chair, the dentist says “Open Wide” and after prodding and poking around for a few minutes says to you “Your gums seem to be much healthier and I can’t find any evidence of cavities. I don’t know what you’re doing it seems to be working. You’re free to go. I’ll see you in 6 months time”.
The relief of not having to have any work done is palpable. No pain and no large bill to pay. What’s the difference here? Rather than brushing and flossing harder or more often, you decided to find out what else you could do in addition to brushing and flossing.
Before he died, Dr Phillips took the time to explain the facts of dentistry to me:
“Let’s face it: there’s not a whole lot of information available out there that gives people a choice on how to care for their mouths. There’s brushing and flossing and a million different kinds of brushes and toothpastes and flosses with which to do this, which brings us back to the basic brushing and flossing. Bearing in mind that 90% of all Americans suffer from some sort of gum disease (yes, children too), and most people over 60 have no teeth at all, is brushing and flossing the answer?”
