PEACE AND LOVE ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP, Inc. (PALAS) AWARDED SIXTY (60) NEW SCHOLARSHIPS TO CARIBBEAN STUDENTS. One-hundred ten (115) scholarships, twelve computers and increased scholarship awards 748% since inception 3 years ago. Hon. Minister Damion Crawford & Attorney Patrick Campbell delivered Keynote addresses at award ceremony – UWI in Kingston, Jamaica.
ATLANTA, GA — August 27, 2013: Peace and Love Academic Scholarship, Inc. (PALAS) award sixty (60) new scholarships for the academic year 2013-2014 to worthy, but economically challenged high school and University/College students (see photo below) in Jamaica and the wider Caribbean region. Hon Minister Damion Crawford, Minister of Tourism & Entertainment and Attorney Patrick Campbell delivered the Keynote addresses at the award ceremony – UWI in Kingston, Jamaica on Saturday, August 24, 2013. Reggae songbird, Winsome Benjamin provided the entertainment and Grace Kennedy & 25th Century Media co-sponsored the event.
PALAS, the Atlanta-headquartered charity organization, has received the support of various corporate bodies and individuals to aid the students. The stated mission of the group is to recognize and honor outstanding academic performances of under privileged students residing in the Caribbean region.
Several partnered scholarships were supported by celebrities such as 16-year old Jamaican singer-songwriter, model, Reggae Pop singer, SAMANTHA-J (“Tight Skirt”). Also reggae songbird Winsome Benjamin, legendary singer Dobby Dobson (O.D) and Dr. Ev. Richardson, CEO of the Caribbean Radio Show. Over 300 persons attended the event, including the sixty (60) well deserving students, some of whom received computers as part of their scholarship award.
The brainchild of Founder/Executive Director Rula Brown, PALAS program was established in December 2010, to honor the memory of young Vanessa Campbell, an aspiring Jamaican artiste who was a casualty of the burgeoning crime and violence problem in Portmore, Jamaica. After Vanessa’s untimely death, an initial scholarship program was created as the SSSJamz/Vanessa Campbell Academic Scholarship to assist high school students from her alma mater, Bridgeport High School.
